I had the best time tonight co-hosting Berdalee's radio show on KGGV in Guerneville CA. We threw out a whole pile of tunes about dogs, many of which I'd never heard before. Of course I spiced it up with some of my poetry, including When A Dog Dies. When I got home I learned that one of our beloved members of the Best Friends Canine Club here in Rohnert Park CA died today. Poppy was a member of Fight Club, a select group that loved to mix it up every morning. Poppy was sort of the announcer. She'd often sit to the side and bark endlessly, a sort of play-by-play announcer that only dogs could understand. She was a sweet dog. The park will be much quieter without her around.
I remember the first day I met Poppy. We did a traditional nose sniff greeting. She smelled very friendly.
WHEN A DOG DIES
There is an ice-cold stream
That runs through the human heart
When a dog dies
There is a loss too cruel
To explain
When a dog dies
Embarrassment can stalk that grief
And muzzle the hearts cry
But those who know
Will see it in your eyes
When a dog dies
